Selection and cultivation
Cherrita cherry comes from the Marjana area, a valley situated at 800 metres above sea level in the municipal areas of Gestalgar, Chiva, Chera and Sot de Chera.
All the farms where the cherries are grown are characterised by their own microclimate and type of soil, although all coincide in having a clay base, with good drainage, slightly limy soil, exposed to good light and air, on sloping hillsides in fresh dry areas, ideal for this type of fruit.
The Cherrita varieties have been specifically chosen for their full adaptation to the characteristics of the growing area, which helps to impregnate the fruit with the character of its place of origin.
Each variety is picked by hand at optimum ripeness, given that, as “non-climacteric” fruit, their level of sugar does not increase after picking, and, therefore, they do not ripen any further. This allows “ Cherrita ” to offer the consumer a staggered market season.
The Cherrita crop is, moreover, characterised by reduced yields under favourable climatic conditions that ensure a good gestation period for the cherry , the desired shape and fully developed flavour.
Destined to be eaten fresh, “ Cherrita ” cherries are selected at the same spot where they are harvested so as to eliminate defective, damaged, cracked and inadequately coloured fruit. There they are graded, packed – all done by hand – then immediately distributed for consumption.
Cherrita cherries are prepared and packed to ensure adequate protection for the produce. The produce is uniformly distributed in the carefully chosen packaging to prevent any alterations in the fruit, each container only containing cherries of the same origin, quality and size.
All of this process is undertaken employing an environmentally friendly use of the land and always with an eye to providing a healthy product , free of chemical waste due to the use of fertilisers, and pesticides and with several exceptional and high quality organoleptic and nutritional qualities. This has been made possible thanks to the introduction of technology that has allowed us to reduce, to a large extent, the amount of pesticides used.
Likewise, Cherrita cherry is at the implementation stage of introducing a selection of the best varieties of cherries from other producers around the Mediterranean in order to supply the huge market demand.
